Growing up, Kome’s founder, Dr. Mango, had a brush with poverty. But it was nothing compared to what he witnessed in some parts of Kenya he visited during missions while studying at the University of Nairobi.

One morning, while on a mission in Marakwet in 2004, his host invited him to witness ahead surgery that would take place outside a neighbor’s hut. The patient sat upright on a stool, throughout the operation. The ‘surgeon’ didn’t use anesthesia, nor did he have any special tools. Using an improvised chisel and mini hammer, he cut out part of the patient’s cracked skull that had caused him endless headaches. Mango looked on in awe.

When the surgery was complete, the patient was offered a cup of porridge before walking about 5km, in the scorching sun, to the local dispensary for a tetanus injection.

By the time Mango left Marakwet, one question bothered him, “what is my contribution towards improving the human condition?” Whereas this question was ignited by the poverty and poor access to healthcare that he witnessed in Marakwet, his search for how and what to contribute to improve the human condition was not limited to solving what he had witnessed in Marakwet. One thing that became very clear for Mango after Marakwet was that the Physics Degree he was pursuing at the time wasn’t the most potent tool for him to deal with the human challenges of his time.

Upon graduation, he continued with his quest to find the ‘how and what’ to contribute towards improving the human condition. Meanwhile he undertook further studies in humanities and worked. These undertakings clarified three things. First, ethical and effective leadership is a central pillar in solving human challenges. Second, business particularly SMEs, is one of the best ways to improve people’s living conditions. Third, purpose is at the heart of everything with a lasting and positive impact.

The next natural thing was to find a vehicle to harness: the power of purpose, ethical and effective leadership, and business to serve humanity, this is why Kome Business Consultants was born. In pursuit of our founding purpose, we endeavour to offer tethered (solutions must have a clear link to the purpose of the organization) and uncomplicated solutions, unlike other consultants, do.

Today, Kome helps businesses to define/clarify the game they should play and how to play to win. Kome’s idea is that organizations and individuals who are clear about their purpose and have ethical and effective leaders rule the marketplace because Clarity Yields Success.
